From Luarca to Frejulfe, part 2

Don't die of shock, but I think it's time to make the time to blog again. Last month at the NGS (National Genealogical Society) a blog follower asked me to start writing it goes.

My last post was part 1 of what I planned to make at least a 2 part post, that was basically a year ago. I had outlined how I was researching the 'de la Fraga' surname in Luarca, Asturias and that a few of the children's baptisms indicated that the father, Manuel Ramon, actually came from Frejulfe. The records indicated that Frejulfe was located in the diocese of Mondoñedo and was part of the Valle de Oro.

Starting Point

According to the information that I had from Manuel Ramon Prieto de la Fraga children's baptism, he was born in Frejulfe, (diocese of Mondoñedo) about 1740. The childrens' baptism record also indicated that Manuel Ramon's parents were: Juan Prieto de la Fraga and Theresa Fernandez (see previous post).

Research Findings

According to the Guia de la Iglesia de España. Frexulfe has the following records: Frejulfé, Valle de Oro (year indicated is the start year of that record type) Baptisms - 1605 Confirmations - 1778 Marriages - 1608 Deaths/Burials - 1618.

Since the diocesan archive has not been microfilmed or digitized the records are only available on site. I asked a colleague and friend if they could do a look up for me, and much to my delight they sent me the following transcription, the marriage record of Manuel Ramon's parents.

We had estimated that Manuel Ramon had been born in Frejulfe about 1740, notice that the marriage occurs in 1734. It should also be recognized, and possibly a post for a future day, that Theresa Fernandez, mother of Manuel Ramon, took her mother's surname. This is quite common during this time period in Galicia - daughters taking on their mother's surname. I should also point out that I am still unsure where the 'Prieto' comes into Manuel Ramon's surname...further research on the family will need to occur to uncover that mystery. I'm guessing it will become more apparent in future research.

The parish records for Frejulfe were searched from 1730 to 1751 (when the volume ended), and Manuel Ramon's baptism record was not found. Three of this siblings were found. Below is one of the parish records found - Manuel Ramon's brother, Francisco (baptism dated 19 Aug 1735).

Two other siblings of Manuel Ramon were found (Mariña - 1737 and Maria Francisca -1739). Given the date of the marriage and baptisms of his siblings, it is still believed that Manuel Ramon was born about 1740 or 1741. At this point we are still trying to figure out why his baptism record does not appear. The most likely explanation was that he was baptized in a neighboring parish.

The dates, places, and names fit together well. Although Manuel Ramon's baptism record hasn't been found up to this point, the other family records piece the family together. To fully understand this research case further research will have to be done in Mondoñedo - a trip that I could really use right now...

I stumpled upon your blog through nuestro ranchos. Does LDS/ family research ever plan on creating an index of what has been indexed?
